weekend of august 2/3 [Jul. 4th, 2008|08:53 am]

drottningen
We will be kid-free that weekend (kids are staying at my mom's) so we want to at least go to dinner with some folks Sat night amidst any other post-move activities (like catching up on movies, you know). If you're interested please save the date and let me know :)

to do today [Jul. 4th, 2008|08:48 am]

drottningen
1) call BA World Cargo to make sure everything's all set and to ask final info on how to get there and will the letter I got from my vet yesterday suffice for them to know Chip is fit to fly (called ATL customs yesterday and they claim a letter from the vet plus proof of rabies suits them just fine). I was expecting a form but it was just a signed letter which made me worry.

2) Fax said letter and medical records plus copy of chip's EU pet passport to my mom for use when she goes to clear his paperwork through customs in ATL next wed.

3) Oh yeah, work some too.

4) Take most of the rest of my stuff home from work today.

5) Starting to pack tonight!

Only one week left with internet access at home. We have vonage so we'll be forwarding our numbers to our cell phones to make sure we don't miss any calls. The first big moving hurdle to successfully get through will be sending Chip to ATL on Wed. Send us good luck vibes. It should be very simple compared to coming to the UK but its still stressful.

What are you guys doing these days?

Staccato Queen [Jul. 3rd, 2008|08:34 pm]

carrieb
I was just re-reading last night's post and decided I should rename myself the Staccato Queen. Did I think I was sending a telegraph? Did I forget that proper sentences need a subject and a verb? Did I forget that using conjunctions to begin a sentence is only ok if you are trying to make a point, but shouldn't be the basis of your whole writing style?

I'm surprised I have any readers left!

I blame the TV entirely. Or should I say lack of TV? Erik has no TV chilling time, so I have no computer chilling time, so I have to pack in as much information as I can with very little time to think about it. Woe is me, woe is me. I won't become the next Mega-Blogger. I think after six years of blogging, that dream has died a sad little death. I love my little blogging community and don't need the trolls that the super-stars have to endure. I don't have the emotional capacity to handle trolls.

Speaking of trolls, not every person I meet lives under a bridge and has bad manners. I meet quite a few nice people during my daily jaunts, but they are not very interesting to write about. I really enjoy most of the women in my social circle these days. They each have quirks and I could write little snippets, but I don't want to. I would never want them to discover the writing and construe it as anything other than good hearted fun. Thus, I'll keep my sharpened pen ready to cut down the psychos, bitches and weirdos and leave the normal-os out of it.

Does anyone have big weekend plans? We're going on a picnic with our Dr Planet friends (I need to get consistent nicknames. They both have PhDs relating to planet/spacey stuff). We're all looking forward to it because the whole family is "our kind" of people. The man is European like Mike. The woman is from Idaho. We have a lot of similar philosophies and beliefs. Their son is a little sweetheart, though he can give Erik a run for the grouchy money. I love spending time with them because it's so comfortable. There's never been any weirdness. Their house is lived in. They are casual and relaxed. There's no pretense about anything. Tomorrow is going to be a great day.

The end.

Or not. Didn't that sound like a middle school essay, though? Staccato Queen. Word. Word. Word. Shot. Shot. Shot. Staccato. Staccato. Staccato.

The word staccato is starting to look fake.

The limited TV experiment is going well, but the potty training took a nose dive today. The dear boy hadn't pooped for two days, which is really unusual. He's usually like clockwork. Of course, he picked the middle of the triceps track, my very favorite BodyPump exercise, to poop his pants. Couldn't he have waited for the lunges? I had a mini internal freak-out because the turds were bright red. Blood! No. . . Play-doh? Couldn't be. Ah-ha! Fancy red food coloring gels from the frosting we made on Monday. Dare I say the coloring works better on turds than on frosting? The frosting was pink. Very, very pink even though the label claimed to be Christmas Red. The turds were just the right shade.

Hey! Dooce made it to the top by talking about poop, so this is just all my evil plot to become a super blog star.

As suspected, the gym poop wasn't enough to make up for two days of pooplessness. He pooped his pants again when we got home while he was standing next to the potty. Is this the rebellion stage I've heard people talk about? It must be. He cried this morning and begged for a diaper, but I am D-O-N-E buying diapers. I have 45 left and they are for night time only.

He's also obsessed with sticking wipes up his butt, which is totally charming. NOT! It was funny the first couple of times, but now it is just a waste. He's totally out of wipes though, since he put a whole brand new tub of them in the toilet today. GRRRRRRR! At least he didn't flush. I guess we can take the toilet lock of that particular toilet. He can open it at will so it's just a nuisance for our guests.

Can you tell today was a really exciting one? I don't have any non-Erik related anecdotes. I didn't meet any weird people or do any weird things. I got my endorphins through BodyPump, but how exciting can I make an entry about lifting weights? One girl had 60 pounds on her bar for squats. She couldn't get it over her head, so the teacher tried to lift it up and couldn't even hold it. All I could think of was that poor girl's back. Have I mentioned lately that I'm addicted to BodyPump? I don't know what it is about lifting weights in time to the music, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Except, of course, the time I had the scary teacher and was in a room full of super-trim twenty-somethings. Then I hated it and wanted to cry, but we'll try to put that out of our minds and remember all the good times.

I need to go to bed. What shall I read? I finished Shadows Return by Lynn Flewelling. Much squeeing was involved. I need to go to her LJ and leave her a nice comment. Not that she would really care, but she might. I don't know. It would probably be better to go write a nice review at Amazon instead.

I don't know if anyone remembers my prior post, but it was about putting my newborn in a mei tai. I gave it a shot, and he screamed like a banchee. It was really disappointing, but I don't think I'm going to give up. I do have good news, though. I decided, just for fun, to see if my 15-month-old would enjoy it even though he hated it when he was younger. He loved it. It made me really happy, especially since he's been needing more attention since Ethan's been born. And it works out great, since he's been wanting me to hold him all the time now.

For the younger one, Ethan, I kind of get the feeling that he would enjoy a sling more than the mei tai.

What is your favorite sling, and why?

Sweet! [Jul. 3rd, 2008|08:03 pm]

[Current Mood | amused]

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing... and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt.

Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.

This class would NOT pray during the commencements----not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it. The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked forblessings on the graduates or their families.

The speeches were nice, but they were routine.....until the final speech received a standing ovation.

A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened.

All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!!

The student on stage.. simply looked at the audience and said, 'GOD BLESS YOU , each and every one of you!'

And he walked off stage...

The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval.

Isn't this a wonderful story? Pass it on to all your friends.........and GOD BLESS YOU!!!! This is a true story; it happened at the University  of  Maryland.

Rumble [Jul. 3rd, 2008|03:57 pm]

blue_eyed_girl
I sometimes feel that the peace between us and two of our closest neighbors is a bit strained, dogwise. There is one dog in each of their households, and the most charitable description I can give either--dog, not neighbor--is "unpleasant." The one I like less is an ugly white boxer who, I swear it, gives me rude looks and mutters nasty comments under his breath whenever he sees me. He's bad-tempered and aggressive and given to accosting passersby, whether they be children, little old ladies, or unassuming housewives walking their own dogs. He is, inexplicably, frequently left out in the unfenced yard unattended and unrestrained. Needless to say, I don't often walk down that way, even though it is the best way to get to the park next-door without having to walk on or cross a busy-ish street.

Last night Petra and I headed out for a little stroll with Lucy, and I saw no evidence of the boxer when I looked down the street, so I decided to go that way. When we got a hundred yards or so away from our house, I noticed that the lesser-of-two-evils neighbor dog, a little black-and-white Spitz-type mix, was out in her yard--also unattended and unrestrained, as is often the case. Her manner of unpleasantness tends more to the side of posturing and is directed only toward other dogs, and she seems otherwise well enough behaved, so I carried on, just keeping an eye on her.

When we came even with her, she started approaching us in that stiff-legged way dominant dogs do. I admonished her sternly to go home, but she didn't stop, so I figured it might just be easier to let her and Lucy do a bit of sniffing before we continued on our way. Lucy, good submissive that she is, kept to that bargain, but after only the most perfunctory of sniffs, the neighbor dog attacked.

I confess, my first impulse was along the lines of "Bitch, bring it." Lucy outweighs her by a good thirty pounds at least, and could take her easily, even leashed. In the interest of good neighbor relations (and of not traumatizing my pre-schooler), however, I pulled Lucy away and brought her to heel. Alerted by the commotion, the neighbors called out to their own dog (they didn't bother to come outside and see what was happening, but whatever), and she trotted away, apparently satisfied that her claim on the street was staked.

I'm still a little agitated about the whole affair, but I guess there's really nothing to do about it other than avoid these two dogs. We have amiable relationships with the neighbors otherwise, and, in the spirit of full disclosure, I admit that my own dogs can be something of a nuisance now and then. While they're not allowed out unrestrained, they have escaped a time or two and run around the neighborhood for a little while before we caught them. Also, they bark quite a bit (mostly indoors, true, but they are loud). Still, they're not aggressive, either one of them, and in my mind that counts for a lot, particularly in a neighborhood like ours, with lots of kids and other dogs.

I think I'm trying to come down with a chest cold or something. One of my code deployments (seemingly innocuous) at work had to be rolled back as it was breaking stuff (crap!). I'm sure I should have known better but I didn't. Move stress. Other work stress.

Everything else is good though.

New, Delicious Species Discovered (from The Onion, unfortunately, so the animals are probably not really as tasty as claimed) (And, yes, it's an old story, but one which I came across when looking for something else.)

Sleeping baby? [Jul. 2nd, 2008|06:32 pm]

[Current Mood | curious]

For those of you who have infants who are still in bucket seats...

If your little one falls asleep in the car, do you still take them out of the bucket seat and put them into your wrap, slling, mei tai, what have you? Or do you take the car seat out and stick it in the stroller?

I went shopping w/ someone this past weekend, and she was a bit stunned that I'd take my sleeping son out of his car seat to put him in the sling. I knew it would be a nightmare trying to maneuver the stroller around...but then got to wondering if I should have just let him stay sleeping in the seat. Besides, I figures if we had a convertible seat that I couldn't remove from the car, this would be a non-issue and I'd have to take him out, sleeping or not.

What do you do in similar situations?

(I'm sorry...I have no idea how to tag this!)

Slow starter [Jul. 2nd, 2008|11:19 pm]

blue_eyed_girl
Summer's been coming in fits and starts this year, and I'm starting to worry that the whole thing will pass like this, without it feeling like it ever really got off the ground. It's been raining, or threatening to, most days, and even when it's mostly clear out there's such a breeze and so many mosquitoes that it's hard to want to stay out for very long.

My mom's due over in two weeks, and I'm really hoping for some nice days so that we can get a few outings in without having to pack along our umbrellas and rain gear. To be honest, though, it's more me than her who's worried about what the weather will bring, considering that she lives in summer practically year-round. No matter what kind of summer we end up having, I'm sure it will be a nice break for her from the sweltering, humid Houston heat.

I'm currently taking a 1 year, $3,000 course to be a Certified Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioner.
The benefits from the oils are incredible & the chemistry of each essential oil amazes me.

Anyway, I found this article about Aromatherapy uses for Mothers & thought I'd post it for y'all.

Wow, the "token dad" actually contributes to the community! Woohoo!

Look who woke up today at 5am feeling good:

I can't wait to get a real video camera so that we'll get better quality footage. Right now I just use the film feature on my digital camera.

Sean does still have some stomach cramping every now and then when he eats. But no puking or fever for almost 48 hours now which everyone says is the sign that he's over it. Yay! He definitely found his thumb yesterday, and not just by accident anymore. He's realized that it's there every time and that discovery is exciting him. haha Robert's a little worried that he'll suck it until he's 15 or something but I'm not overly concerned. He never did accept the pacifier very well and still won't take it if I try to give it in place of his thumb. I think he should be allowed to have what he wants in this case.

We went to the chiropractor today. I'm hoping he can get my SPD pain under control so that I can go off the pain medications I've been taking. He also looked Sean over and did a few adjustments to help with his gassy tummy problems. Sean laughed the whole time. hehe
